In place of reading logs, students in 5H will participate in a Book Challenge to keep track of your individual reading progress. Choose books that interest you and are in your Lexile range. Read one book at a time, complete the requirements for each book, and then start a new book. We read 20+ minutes each day in class and all students are required to read an additional 20 minutes at home per day. A grade per month is given out of 10 points. See Below for detailed information.
Steps for the Book Challenge
Step 1: Find a Good Book (look for recommendations from your classmates on the "I Loved This Book" page in the Book Challenge resource binder). Be sure to list your book there if you love/loved it!
Step 2: Record the author, title and genre on your reading list in your red Book Challenge folder. Use the genre overview document below to help you decide what genre your book is.
Step 3: Read the Book
Step 4: When you are finished, Write a short Book Review. Don't forget to fill in the stars on your reading list. Click on the document below for instructions to write a Book Review. A copy of the instructions should also be in your red folder. The instruction page includes a graphic organizer on one side and what I am looking for in the review on the other to help you organize your thoughts.
Step 5: Sign-up for a Book Talk on the Calendar in the Book Challenge resource binder
Step 6: Give your Book Talk to the Class
Step 7: Hand in your Book Review and put a sticker on your chart
Step 8: Find another good Book and begin reading!

Grading for Book Challenge
Each student will have an individual goal for reading books. In order to reach your goal for the year, you will divide your goal by 9 to find out how many books you need to read each month. You will receive points as shown below (a total of 5 points) for each book read during this school year. Everyone must read at least 2 books each month.
Points for each book
2 points--reading the book
2 points--a complete written book review
1 point--for the book talk
Your Book Challenge grade will be entered each month and will be based on the number of books read, how well you are completing the book reviews and your book talks.
